The Promise at the Desert Truck Stop
Part 2
The biker gently closed the little girl's fingers around the money.
"No," he said softly. "Keep it. You might need it later."
The little girl looked up with tear-filled eyes.
"But... everyone said finding my mom would cost money."
The biker knelt so they were eye to eye.
"Not everyone charges for doing the right thing."
For the first time that day, the girl managed a tiny smile.
"My name is Lily."
He nodded.
"I'm Derek."
He stood and glanced toward the old truck stop.
"Now tell me everything."
Lily wiped her eyes.
"My mom went with a man in a black pickup truck. She told me to wait here because she'd only be gone for a minute."
"How long ago?"
"I don't know..."
She looked toward the setting sun.
"It got dark... then morning came... then today."
Derek's jaw tightened.
Someone had left a little girl alone in the middle of the desert.
He wasn't going to let that go.
He walked toward his motorcycle and pulled out a small radio.
One after another...
Five bikers arrived.
Each wore the same IRON CLAN patch.
A gray-haired biker stepped forward.
"What happened, Derek?"
He pointed toward Lily.
"We're finding her mother."
No one asked another question.
One biker checked nearby security cameras.
Another questioned truck drivers.
A third searched the highway exits.
The truck stop owner suddenly remembered something.
"There was a black pickup yesterday."
"Did you see the license plate?"
"Only the last three numbers... seven... four... one."
Derek smiled slightly.
"It'll be enough."
Lily watched the bikers scatter in every direction.
She whispered,
"You really think you'll find her?"
Derek looked at her with complete confidence.
"We're not leaving without your mom."
For the first time in two days...
Lily believed someone.
