The Little Girl Chose the Maid

PART 2 – The Choice Nobody Expected

The grand ballroom remained silent.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, but no one dared to speak.

Every guest stared at the little girl standing confidently in the center of the room.

Sophie's tiny hand was still pointing toward Anna—the quiet maid who had spent the entire day making sure everyone else's celebration was perfect.

Anna's hands trembled.

She lowered her eyes.

"I... I don't understand..."

Sophie's father slowly knelt beside his daughter.

His voice was gentle.

"Sweetheart... everyone is looking at you."

Sophie nodded.

"I know."

"Then why did you choose Anna?"

Without hesitation, Sophie answered.

"Because she loves me."

The room fell even quieter.

Several wealthy women looked at one another.

One of them whispered,

"That's impossible."

Another shook her head.

"She's only a maid."

Anna immediately lowered her head.

"I'm sorry, sir."

She took a small step backward.

"I never wanted to cause any trouble."

Sophie's father raised his hand.

"No, Anna... stay."

Anna stopped.

For the first time, he truly looked at her.

Not as an employee.

Not as someone who cleaned the mansion.

But as a person.

Sophie's grandmother slowly approached.

Her elegant gown brushed softly across the polished marble floor.

She smiled at Sophie.

"My dear... can you tell us why?"

Sophie turned toward everyone.

Her little voice echoed through the ballroom.

"When Mommy died..."

The entire room became silent.

"...everyone hugged Daddy."

She looked down.

"But nobody hugged me."

Many guests lowered their eyes.

Sophie continued.

"I was scared every night."

"I cried."

"I missed Mommy."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"And Anna stayed with me."

Anna immediately covered her mouth.

She had never told anyone about those nights.

Sophie smiled through her tears.

"She read me bedtime stories."

"She made hot chocolate."

"When I couldn't sleep..."

"...she stayed beside me."

Anna could no longer hold back her tears.

"I only did what anyone should do..."

Sophie shook her head.

"No."

"You loved me."

The words pierced every heart inside the ballroom.

Sophie's father slowly stood.

He remembered countless mornings leaving for work...

believing Sophie was fine.

He had never realized how lonely she had become.

He looked toward Anna.

"Is... is everything she said true?"

Anna hesitated.

"I didn't want to trouble you."

"I knew you were grieving too."

"I thought Sophie needed someone."

"I couldn't replace her mother..."

"...but I couldn't leave her crying either."

Sophie's father closed his eyes.

A wave of guilt washed over him.

Across the room, his bride stood frozen.

She had spent months planning the perfect wedding.

Yet she had never noticed the little girl's loneliness.

One guest quietly wiped away tears.

Another whispered,

"I judged her."

"So did I."

Sophie's grandmother walked toward Anna.

For years she had barely spoken to the maid.

Now she gently took Anna's hands.

"They've been cold all evening."

Anna looked shocked.

"I'm... alright."

The elderly woman smiled sadly.

"No."

"You've carried this family more than we knew."

Anna couldn't answer.

She simply cried.

Sophie suddenly ran across the ballroom.

She hugged Anna tightly around the waist.

"I don't want you standing over there."

"I want you with us."

The ballroom erupted into emotional silence.

Not applause.

Not whispers.

Just silence.

Because everyone had just witnessed something money could never buy.

Love.
